2009-06-29 - ABB Robotics has been joined by some of the UK’s leading rail manufacturers for its ‘Robots in Rail Manufacturing Technology day’, held on 4th June 2009 in Milton Keynes. The event invited manufacturers from the rail industry to explore the opportunities and key reasons justifying robotic technology investment within the rail industry, as well as the new levels of competitiveness and productivity through safe, flexible and speedy robot automation.
Attendees were encouraged to join in break-out sessions including ABB’s ‘hands-on’ introduction to basic programming commands, 3D robotics simulation software; RobotStudio, and the recently launched ABB Remote Service Technology. ABB’s Remote Service offering uses GPRS communication where both the customer and ABB can monitor a robot’s health and record key performance data whilst in operation.
Application Simulations & Key Speakers
ABB is keen to promote the benefits of robotic technology for the rail industry. A host of manufacturers within the rail industry attended and were invited to view simulations of robots performing cleaning and painting; machine handling and tending; inspection; welding; deburring; cutting and civil engineering activities. Joining attendees on the day were a host of key speakers from ABB and their customers, including ABB’s Rail Development Manager Robotics UK, Steve Bartholomew; William McCluskey Group Vice President Global Account Director - Bombardier along with an ABB customer within the metal fabrication industry who have already integrated robotic technology in their own manufacturing processes, many of which are very similar to those employed in railway applications.
Educating the Benefits of Robots
ABB was also joined by 14 local apprentices, 10 of which were from a leading UK specialist in the overhaul, refurbishment, repair and modernisation of rolling stock. The apprentices were invited to learn more about automated technology and how manufacturing lines can benefit from robotic technology.
Speaking about the opportunities for robots in rail processes, Steve Bartholomew, Rail Development Manager for ABB Robotics UK comments; “The Robots in Rail Manufacturing Technology day offered our customers an insight into the potential robotic applications for the rail industry.”
Steve continues, “Our experience with the metal fabrication industry has provided us with an insight into processes that mirror those in the rail industries. We are keen to continue expanding our knowledge to help further integrate robotics in this field to help manufacturers reap the benefits automated technology can bring.”
10 Key Benefits
ABB is currently running a nationwide campaign to educate UK manufacturing companies about the benefits of robots. Looking at the 10 key benefits typically enjoyed by robot users worldwide, the campaign is aimed at demonstrating how robots can actually help manufacturers to transform their competitiveness and deliver significantly enhanced levels of productivity, efficiency and profitability.
