100 millionth Tango® product

Jablonec nad Nisou, October 22nd, 2015 – ABB releases a record-breaking number of Tango® design range of switches and sockets on the Czech market

ABB, a leading global power and automation company, has reached another milestone, manufacturing its one hundred-millionth switch and socket from the Tango® design range. Launched in 1995, Tango® is one of the most popular home wiring accessories range in the Czech Republic.

The design was created by Vlastimil Hujer, a designer from ABB’s Jablonec nad Nisou plant, and academic sculptor Jiří Dostál. Both authors received a special product to mark the milestones, presented by ABB representatives today.

The history of the Tango® design dates back to 1992, when ABB faced market demand for new double sockets. The original Classic design did not conform to new standards anymore and had to be replaced.

“The request for creating a design for new switches and sockets was a challenge. I imagined the switch in the context of a room and did my best to create the design so that it would appeal to my friends. I remember seeing a car with a fantastic bonnet in Jablonec at the time. It was this impulse that defined the visual expression of the switches, which was then used in sockets, too,” the designer Jiří Dostál comments on Tango®.

Tango® is a range of matching switches, sockets and other products. Characterized by extraordinary shape, high gloss and originally four basic colourways, the timeless design has guaranteed permanent success to the Tango® range. New colour and equipment variants have been added to the Tango® range based on customers’ requests. ABB assembly lines can manufacture 6,000 Tango® products during one shift.

“The popular Tango® has been successful on the market for 20 years. With Tango®, ABB has responded to both the market demand and latest trends in technology and design. Along with Tango® we currently have more 15 design ranges of switches and sockets in a range of colour and material variants. The best-known ranges include Neo® and the award-winning Levit®, created by Czech Grand Design 2013 award winner Jan Čapek,” says Lucie Melicharová Jandová, ABB Country Marketing Communications & PR Manager.
