Škoda and ABB bringelectric buses to Czech cities

In the course of the next few years, electric buses will be the least costly public transport platform for cities and municipalities

Prague, July 30, 2013 – ABB and Škoda Electric have today announced the signing of a cooperation agreement for the delivery of a system solution for electric buses, including the charging infrastructure for the city of Pilsen. The entire solution consists of vehicles equipped with electric equipment and drives from Škoda Electric and the ARCS (Automatic Roof-top Connection System) infrastructure, which provides automated connection of the vehicles to the ABB TERRA E-BUS smart charging system. The system is based on the Combo 2 standard, which will become binding for all electric vehicle manufacturers starting from 2017, with regard to the approval for operation on public roads. The cooperation of both companies is a natural response to growing market demand for new sustainable technology in public transport.

A number of the world’s capitals, such as Brussels, Hamburg and Tallinn, have undertook to gradually replace classic buses with electric ones, starting from 2015, with the goal of eliminating Diesel engines from public transport in the subsequent 10 years, i.e. by 2025, altogether. The ABB E-BUS solution enables public transport companies to switch to sustainable public transport and to achieve an overall reduction of operating costs in the future. Several independent studies have confirmed that electric buses will be the least costly transport platform for public transport in cities and municipalities with regard to total cost of operation (TCO) in the next couple of years. Most recent calculations suggest TCO reduction by about 25 % as compared to classic Diesel-powered buses.

ABB provides technology and solutions for the charging of electric vehicles in individual and public transport, offering electric bus manufacturers a key to success in the form of sophisticated charging infrastructure, which is capable of communicating with superordinate end-user systems (such as the control centre and public transport systems, etc.). ABB has its own production plans, R&D and supervision centres, service and sophisticated spare part logistics with global coverage in more than 100 countries. It is this capacity to provide such background along with the state-of-the-art technology that is absolutely key in the strategic field of public transport.

Škoda Electric the world’s leading manufacturer of trolley buses and electric equipment for public transport and rail vehicles. Over the past half a year alone, the company has signed contracts in Riga, Lithuania; Sofia, Bulgaria; and Bratislava, Slovakia for almost 260 vehicles worth CZK 4.4 billion. Along with trolley buses, it also manufactures electric drives and traction motors. For American concern GE Transportation, Škoda Electric is currently making 660 pieces of complete mechanical drives for 110 locomotives, which will be used for passenger transport in Kazakhstan. A complete traction equipment for 23 five-car underground train units is being shipped to Suzhou, China, and a complete electric equipment and mechanical drives for 80 locomotives are being delivered to the Korean company Hyundai Rotem.

The high technical standard of Škoda Electric’s products, long-standing manufacturing experience and superior quality of technology, coupled with high employee productivity, create excellent conditions for successful manufacturing and delivery to home and the international markets. Every year, the company invests hundreds of million Czech crowns into R&D. Škoda Electric provides complex system solutions for sustainable transport, including city public transport.
